OVERVIEW
The Swamp District is the most rundown and dirtiest area of Blackstone. After the breaking of the Heart Stone, it has deteriorated significantly since the breaking of the Heart Stone. The district is characterized by its makeshift fisherman huts perched on poles and the pervasive stench from the city’s sewers. It’s a place where you don’t want to be after dark, that’s if you want to leave with your coin purse.
ARCHITECTURE
Most of the houses stand on poles, resembling fisherman huts. These homes are patched together with driftwood and scavenged planks, giving the district a ramshackle appearance.
Ringwall Proximity: Some buildings are situated near the ringwall, with sewage outlets nearby, adding to the district’s unbearable odor.
Floating Pontoons and Wooden Bridges: Since there is virtually no solid land, houses are connected by floating pontoons and rickety wooden bridges.
ATMOSPHERE
The district exudes a sense of defeat and neglect. It’s a place where hope is scarce, and survival is the primary concern.
Job opportunities are almost nonexistent, contributing to widespread poverty and desperation. The murky waters surrounding the district are home to dangerous creatures, adding an element of peril to daily life.
NOTABLE FEATURES
Some houses have waterwheels that generate free labor by utilizing the flow of sewage. These wheels, however, contribute to the district’s foul smell. Before the breaking of the Heart Stone, the Swamp District was a more livable area. The tall walls and the subsequent isolation were not necessary before the rise of the ferals.
The district is full of hidden corners and secret passageways used by criminals for smuggling and hiding from the law.
INHABITANTS
The residents are the lowest in Blackstone’s social hierarchy. They are often unemployed, and living in extreme poverty. The district harbors a significant number of criminals, adding to its dangerous reputation. Those who live here are resourceful, making do with whatever materials they can find to build and repair their homes.
A few skilled but destitute artisans and craftsmen still reside here, remnants of a more prosperous past, creating makeshift tools and items from scrap materials.
“I think we got a nest of rats living up there,” Mrs. Warthback said as she stabbed the ceiling again and Ellie could hear an army of little feet scurrying around. “The rats could be a nice roast for dinner,” Erlan said, barely awake as he let out a rumbling fart and started snoring again.
